University of Leeds Catered Accommodation
Prospective students

Welcome to the University of Leeds! On these pages you'll find lots of information about where you'll live when you come to Leeds - we guarantee University accommodation to new first year students (see below for further details).

If you've got a particular question for us, get in touch

Our guarantee

We guarantee you an offer of a place in our accommodation for the year if you are:

  • a first year undergraduate
  • an international undergraduate (i.e. you pay fees at the international rate). You are guaranteed a place in our accommodation until you finish your course, provided you apply by the stated deadlines (usually March).
  • an undergraduate exchange student
  • an international postgraduate student (i.e. you pay fees at the international rate) and you are new to Leeds

But you have to apply by the deadlines

1st July if you're a first year undergraduate applicant, or an undergraduate exchange student coming to Leeds in September (for both semesters, or semester 1 only)

1st July if you're an international postgraduate student starting in September or October.

1st December if you're an undergraduate exchange student coming to Leeds in January (for semester 2)

If you miss any of these deadlines we can't guarantee you a place but we will still try to house you.
If you're coming to Leeds through Clearing, we'll usually be able to help you find a place. Look at the information you'll receive from your department, or at the information posted on this website each August.
If you want to bring your partner or family, to Leeds we do have suitable University accommodation, but places are limited. Some of our accommodation is also specially designed for students with disabilities. If you have some form of special requirement let us know: even if you think you're not covered by our guarantee we may still be able to help you.

About our accommodation

There's lots to choose from! Residences large and small, in contemporary or traditional buildings, on campus, close to the city centre or further afield.

All our rooms have a single bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. Around half of our rooms are en-suite and where there's a shared bathroom some rooms also have a washbasin. If you're in a self-catering room you'll share kitchen facilities with a number of other residents. All residences have launderettes, or provide washing machines.

Different residences have different facilities - internet access, double beds, parking spaces, squash courts, pool tables, common rooms, shops, music practice rooms, bars... Browse through these pages to find out more about each site.

Catered or self-catering?

In our catered accommodation your meals are provided for you, in our self-catering accommodation you share a kitchen and cook for yourself. The choice is yours!

If you don't want to cook for yourself and like to know that meals will be ready for you at specific times of the day, catered accommodation might suit you best. Self-catering might be better if you like to live life more independently. In self-catering residences we provide kitchen facilities that you share with a small number of other residents.

If having an en-suite room is important to you then you should be aware that most of our en-suite facilities are in self-catering accommodation.

All of our postgraduate accommodation is in self-catering residences.

You're covered

No matter which residence you choose, your rent includes insurance for your personal possessions both in your accommodation and when you're travelling to and from home at the start and end of each term. We'll send you more information with your contract.

Help and advice

Each residence has one or more wardens and it's their job to keep an eye on the site and help you with any problems. They hold advisory sessions each week during term time. Most residences also have resident subwardens - usually postgraduate or mature students - which mean's there's someone there 24 hours a day during term time in case of emergencies. Wardens and subwardens also work with the residence committees at each residence to organise sporting and social events

What you sign up to

If you take a University room, we'll ask you to sign a contract for the whole academic year (September to June), unless you are only attending university for a short course. Contracts for catered residences are usually 39 weeks. Please note that meals and other services are not provided during the university vacation times (12th December to 10th January and 20th March to 18th April). Contracts for self-catered residences are usually for 42 weeks.

The contract commits you to rent your room until the end of the year and to follow our basic regulations. These are to ensure that everyone can live together happily and safely, so include such things as no noise after 11pm and showing consideration for others.

You should read the details of the contract carefully before you sign it, just to be sure you've no problem with any of the clauses.

Getting around

To enjoy life to the full while you're a student at Leeds (and to get to your studies every day!) you need to be able to get around the city. Leeds has an excellent public transport system, with buses running from the city centre until 3am. There are also cycle routes along the main roads and cycle storage facilities at most residences. If you plan to bring a car we're sorry to say that, because of space restrictions, you won't be able to park on campus. Some of our accommodation has parking spaces for residents.

Visiting us

If you're coming to the University for a departmental open day, or just to have a look round, you're welcome to visit our accommodation sites. Our residences are in use all year round so we may not be able to show you individual rooms or communal areas, but staff in the accommodation office on campus will be happy to answer your questions.

We hold an Accommodation Viewing Day every year in the spring, details of which are made available in March.
