University of Leeds Current Students Accommodation
Clarence Dock

Your Residence

Clarence Dock is in an attractive city centre location, next to the River Aire which gives you great views, and The Royal Armouries museum (which means you get extra security via 24hr CCTV cameras).

All rooms are en-suite and flats are shared between 5 or 6. Blocks C and D are the largest, with 5 floors and 3 flats per floor, and both blocks have a lift. Most of the other blocks have 4 floors with 2 flats per floor, except for Blocks A, F, J and M which only have 3 floors. The residence office is situated to the left of the front gates as you enter. The bar/café is located across from Block C and the laundry can be found across from Block D.

The washing machines and dryers are operated by a top-up card system that downloads credit online (so there's no need to have cash on you). For extra convenience, you can check the machines online from your PC, so there's no need to go down and wait for a machine. There's even an environmentally-friendly wash cycle (which is also the cheapest option). Should there be a problem with a machine you've got access to a quick response maintenance service at the end of the phone, and an engineer will attend as first call the next day.

All rooms have single beds.

There is also a residents only gym which is open every day from 8am to 9pm. Students must first book an induction via the Clarence Dock site office in order to be issued with a pass.

The Clarence Dock bar and cafe is open during term time from 2.00pm -11.00pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 6.00pm - 11.00pm and on Sunday 6.00pm until 10.30pm. As well as serving a wide range of alcoholic and soft drinks, the bar also serves fast food to eat in or take away. There are three pool tables, a dartboard and satellite television. If you've got a good idea for a party or an event in the bar then let us know. Private party bookings are also available, just speak to the site staff.

Your Warden

At Clarence Dock there is one warden, Denise Aston, and six subwardens who all live at the site. Denise can offer guidance on almost anything and is always willing to listen. You can see her during term time at her advisory sessions - just turn up. If you can't get to an advisory session you can make an appointment for a different time by emailing her: d.aston@leeds.ac.uk. If you have a problem or question out of term time you can contact the Accommodation Office.

Your Subwardens

Subwardens are usually postgraduate or mature undergraduate students who support the warden, and you can contact them for advice or for help with practical problems. There's a subwarden on duty out of office hours during term time in case you have an urgent problem - see the contact details on the notice-boards round the site or ring 07983 589 342. (NB You should ring their doorbell as it can be difficult to hear a knock on the door, but please remember that subwardens live with other residents, so ring once then wait a while as they may be occupied or sleeping, especially if it's late at night.)

Disregarding instructions from a subwarden may mean you have to attend a disciplinary meeting and may have to pay a fine, so pay attention if they ask you to stop doing something.

Your residence office

You can call in here to see the Residence Managers or to report faults. Faults can also be reported via email to clarencedock@leeds.ac.uk.

Getting Home

Below you will find some travel information specific to your residence. For more general information see our travel page.

Bus: bus No 28 goes to and from the University campus, journey time between 20 and 40 minutes (depending on the traffic) and the stop is just next door to the residence office. The No 28 also goes through the popular student area of Headingley and as far as Bodington Hall during term time. The No 752 goes to the large Morrisons supermarket on Kirkstall Rd, via the University.

Walk: lots of students choose the 40 minute walk from the University campus through the city centre. You need your swipe card if you are leaving the site on foot. There are two ways out: one onto Clarence Road by the shop and the office, and one onto Armouries Drive (by the waterfront) between A and P blocks.

Car: if you have a parking permit then your swipe card will be programmed to open the vehicle entrance gate. To enter the site use your swipe card and wait until the gate is fully open before driving in. Do not try and come in through the exit gate - you could damage both your car and the gate. If you have a visitor, make sure you are there to allow access. Residence staff will not allow non residents on site without your permission.
To leave the site, drive up to the exit gate - making sure that your front tyres don't cross the white line - and the gate will automatically swing outwards. If you drive forward too soon a safety sensor will be triggered and the gate will stop halfway. To open it fully you need to reverse back over the white line.
The gates at Clarence Dock are there to make sure that only residents and staff can gain access. Don't try to force them open.

Taxis: these are some phone numbers for local registered taxi firms:

  • City Cabs 0113 246 9999
  • Streamline 0113 244 3322
  • Amber Cars (0113 230 6090) will bring you home if you have no cash - you just have to give them your Union card. Then the following day you go to the Students' Union to pick up your card and pay the fare.
  • Arrow (0113 258 5888) offer a free text back scheme: book your taxi from your mobile (UK only), and you will receive a text stating the registration number, colour and make of the car sent to pick you up. A good safety feature! You can also get a student discount card by applying online at www.arrowprivatehire.co.uk/arrow_leeds/student_discounts.php.

Taxi drivers and food delivery drivers aren't allowed on site. If you order a take-away or a taxi please wait near the vehicle entrance for it to arrive so the drivers don't have to sound the horn. It's very disturbing late at night.

Caution

You must be very careful on the waterfront. Avoid the river and towpath during floods, and do not remove the lifebuoys or any other safety equipment. We take it very seriously if we find any of the safety equipment in flats or rooms, and it may lead to prosecution by the relevant authorities.

Staying in touch

Your new address is:
Your name (family name underlined)
Your block name and room number (eg D3.14)
Clarence Dock Residences
Clarence Road
Leeds
LS10 1LU

Mail is delivered to the office and then put into the locked mail box in your block. (Make sure you tell people to put your block and room number on your letters.) You can collect any parcels, registered letters or anything marked 'private and confidential' from the office, for which you have to show your student card.

Please remember to tell relatives and friends not to send money or vouchers through the post. Registered mail is the only safe way to send valuables. Each year a number of students fail to receive birthday cards and letters containing cash.

There's no delivery on weekends, Bank holidays or days when the University is closed, and we don't forward your mail to you during vacations. After the end of term we will forward mail to a UK address for up to ten days, provided that you leave stamped addressed envelopes at the office. After ten days we return any mail to sender.
