Refugee / Language Support
Refugee Support Network (RSN) / English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Recruiting: Recruiting until June 15th 2012 for the academic year 2012-13.
Requirement: One hour a week for a minimum of 10 weeks
Training: Compulsory, provided by the Language Centre and Access Academy
Volunteers support children who have English as an additional language. Some are refugee
or asylum seeking children; others are in Leeds because of their parents work or study commitments.
Arabic, Portuguese, Czech, Polish, Mandarin, Russian,
French, Albanian, Spanish, Swahili, Gujurati, Pashto - these are only some of our popular language requests
Volunteers work either on a one-to-one basis or with a small group of children, under the supervision of the class teacher, helping the pupils integrate into the classroom, improve their English language skills and raise their confidence.
You do not need to have experience of any foreign languages to take part as full EAL training is provided by the Language Centre; however any language skills you do have are always welcome!
We particularly welcome volunteers with knowledge of Eastern European languages.
