Tutoring
Recruiting: Recruiting now for the academic year 2012-13.
Requirement: One half-day a week for 10 weeks beginning in October
Training: Compulsory, provided by the Access Academy
The Access Academy Tutoring programme is an excellent introduction to the work of classroom assistants. Whether you want to gain experience for a career in teaching or you simply want a new challenge, volunteering as a tutor will equip you with a broad range of transferable skills, which will enhance your career prospects and personal development.
You will be working with individuals or groups of children under the supervision of a teacher, in primary schools in some of the most deprived inner-city areas of Leeds and West Yorkshire, where educational achievement is low and where support is needed to help raise children's attainment and aspirations. Your work will be diverse and include literacy and numeracy, as well as arts and crafts, sports and drama.
We also receive requests from secondary schools for tutor support in specific subject areas. The most popular requests for help are for Maths, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages and the Sciences.
Whatever your interests or subject area, schools are always seeking enthusiastic undergraduates who are willing to act as positive role models and who will share their time and skills to help the children and young people of Leeds and West Yorkshire to aim higher and reach their full potential.
Gifted and Talented Maths Primary Tutoring
This project works in the same way as the standard primary tutoring above, but focuses on working with small groups of year five and six budding mathematicians. You will receive training to help you develop and deliver mathematical activities to inspire and energise gifted and talented children in local primary schools.
