Arthritis Care, Young People and Families
Arthritis Care, Young People and Families is a locally based group linked to the national organisation, Arthritis Care. It aims to support children/young people with arthritis and their families through: providing information; enabling contact with others sharing similar experiences; promoting greater understanding and awareness of the needs of children/young people who have arthritis and all those involved in their care; identifying relevant services and ways in which these could be improved; liaising with other relevant organisations.
The group was developed as a response to needs identified through current research within the University and includes working partnerships with staff from Paediatric Rheumatology within the local trust. Organised by people with experience of young people with arthritis and those involved in their care, the group provides information and contacts which can be accessed as and when required, a small number of social/informative events throughout the year and a regular newsletter. Some events offered to date include: theatre trips, education/careers information session, health promotion in schools, a guided tour of YTV studios and a family away-day. Workshops aimed at improving communication between professionals and service users are offered and work into improving experiences of children with arthritis and their families is ongoing.
