Abstract

(Simon Hewitt)

It has been suggested by a number of recent authors that philosophy should be understood as concerned with conceptual understanding. In particular, Haslanger and others have suggested that this understanding could profitably be applied within social philosophy, the task of which becomes to reshape our concepts of sex, race etc. I shall argue that once proper attention is played to the nature of language as a situated social practice we can see that there are severe limits to approach. In the course of understanding why this is so, however, we can gain a better perspective on the nature of ideology and on the reason why some political projects ought to be understood as utopian in a pejorative sense.
