Joint Honours
In a Joint Honours programme you concentrate on two subjects. We offer English with: a language, classics subjects, History, History of Art, Music, Philosophy, Social Policy, Sociology and Theology and Religious Studies.
Electives
Students can also take some modules outside their main subject(s); these modules are called 'electives'. (Many students take English modules as part of a Single Honours programmes in other subjects). Students have a lot of flexibility in developing their own programmes. Every year you are expected to take 120 credits altogether: in the School of English most modules are 20 credits. If, at the end of your Level 1, you think you would prefer another programme of study, it is sometimes possible to transfer to another programme.
We classify modules as 'core', 'option' or 'elective'. An elective is a module you do in a subject that is not named in your programme.
In the School of English 'core modules' are team taught, through lectures and seminars. They deal with wider topics: a period of time or a region in literature, or concepts in language. 'Option modules' are more specialised, and are usually taught by one tutor, mainly through seminars. Staff offer option modules in areas of their research. Staff offer option modules in areas of their research and topics on offer will change from year to year.
Study abroad
Whatever programme you do, you may decide to apply for a year abroad. Students who we regard as making making good progress will succeed in this application. In the second year of study, students who are accepted for a year abroad transfer to a four year programme, and spend their third year in another university, with which we have links. There they follow an approved course of study.
Work placement
The School of English offers a work placement scheme, which gives students the opportunity to spend their third year working in a graduate-level job as part of their degree at Leeds. Examples of placements might be working in a library or for a publishing company, but also teaching English abroad. Placements can be undertaken anywhere in the world. Work placements give students valuable experience and important skills and will also enhance their employability after graduation.
