Postgraduate Study in the School of English

The School of English provides a rich and varied environment for postgraduate work at both MA and PhD levels.

  • The School was ranked joint-eighth in UK English departments in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
  • Our MA programmes and supervision of PhD students span all areas of English literature from Old English to the present; in American and Commonwealth & Postcolonial Literatures; in English language; in Icelandic; and in Theatre Studies.
  • We have excellent library facilities in the Brotherton Library, a member of the Consortium of University Research Libraries.
  • We have a very high completion rate for students at both MA and PhD levels, reflecting the careful supervision and individual attention all postgraduate students receive.
