MA Schemes
View pages in this documentOur wide range of MA schemes means that students find themselves in a numerous and diversified academic community. Since many of the MA schemes allow students to choose one of their four modules from outside their immediate field of specialisation - though always in an adjacent area - students can expand both their intellectual and social horizons.
MA schemes in the School of English (2012/13):
- MA American Literature and Culture
- MA English Literature
- MA English Renaissance Literature
- MA Modern and Contemporary Literature
- MA Postcolonial Literary and Cultural Studies
- MA Romantic Literature and Culture

How the courses are organised and how they run
All MA schemes are fully modularised, with credit values assigned to each component of the degree. Most schemes require the completion of a Research Methods module (taken alongside beginning PhD students), four taught modules and a dissertation. Each module runs for one semester. Teaching is normally conducted through two-hour weekly sessions in small groups. Detailed reading lists will be sent out to students in the June preceding September entry; at this point students are asked to make a preliminary choice of modules.
When students arrive in September, they will meet Scheme Coordinators who will discuss module choices and the dissertation. A supervisor is appointed to assist with the dissertation; the supervisor will advise on the scope and structure of the topic, on primary and secondary reading, and will read plans and drafts of chapters. The dissertation and all work done for examination is double-marked so as to ensure fairness and comparability of standards.
All MA schemes serve the needs of students who wish to develop further their enthusiasm for and interest in the subject; these schemes also offer an excellent preparation for those who are thinking of undertaking further research at doctoral level.
All modules are taught during the day (generally 9am - 5pm) for both full-time and part-time students. See what one former student says about studying in the School of English.
Further details on currently taught modules can be found on our downloads pages (please see link at the bottom of this page). Please note that this is an indicative module list. Our modules change regularly and a different selection is available every year.
