This Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 in commemoration of the late Emeritus Professor of Theology at the University of Leeds and renowned historian of Christianity in Africa, Adrian Hastings.
The Fund is specifically for African applicants accepted for the doctoral programme in Theology and Religious Studies, in particular those who experience financial hardship. The Fund is not able to offer full PhD scholarships but will typically offer a bursary of £2,000-3,000 per annum to students who have already secured the majority of their funding from other sources.
The Fund contributes to the Universitys long-term commitment to creative engagement with the African continent. Within the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, African Christianity, and religion in Africa more broadly, are key areas of study. Several African students have been assisted by the Fund and are now leading figures in academic, church and professional circles.African doctoral students in Theology and Religious Studies may apply for an Adrian Hastings Africa Scholarship through the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science.
