Residence abroad (Modern Languages and Cultures)
Introduction to residence abroad
View pages in this documentExperience of living in another country is at the heart of our language programmes and offers the opportunity both to develop a high-level of competence in the language(s) you are learning and to immerse yourself in the culture of the country in which you are resident.
If you choose one of our single honours programmes you will spend a year in a country in which your language of study is spoken. For those learning a language ab initio this will usually involve following a specially devised course offered by one of our partner institutions in China, Japan, Egypt or Morocco, or at a university in Italy. Those students who enter a programme with an A level in that language will, subject to the particular requirements of their programme, have the option to study at a university, teach English in a school, or undertake a work placement.
For those who choose one of our array of two-language joint honours programmes, you will normally spend a year in one of the countries whose language you are studying, and a term in a country in which your other language is spoken. Depending on the combination of languages, your programme may specify which country you spend which period of time in.
If you choose a programme which combines a language with a non-language subject (for example, French and History), you will spend a year abroad in a country in which your language of study is spoken.
Further information can be found by following the 'courses' link on the right hand side of this page.
If you choose to study Linguistics and Phonetics, you still have the option of spending a year abroad, organised via the Study Abroad Office, with the opportunity to study at a fantastic range of institutions right across the world.
