Academic Research and Study in the School of English
The School of English is ranked joint-eighth in UK English departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Research at Leeds is carried out in all periods of English literary history, from Old English to the present day, and includes English language, American Literature and Culture, Commonwealth & Postcolonial Literatures and Theatre Studies. Staff are grouped into Research Areas, each of which offers an MA degree programme, and supervision for PhD students. Most research groups run a regular series of research seminars, and over the years Leeds has hosted many major conferences.
