This will be the first overarching conference organised by the Mixed Cinema Network, an international body devoted to the study of cinema as a fundamentally interdisciplinary and intercultural subject area. The conference will be convenened by Professor Lúcia Nagib, Director of Centre for World Cinemas, University of Leeds

The event is the first in a series of three workshops to be hosted by the White Rose Mixed Cinema Network.

Cross Cultural Dialogue: Taiwan Film Festival

In 2010, Dr Ming-Yeh Rawnsley, Research Fellow of the Institute of Communications Studies and White Rose East Asian Centre, University of Leeds, continues and expands Cross-Cultural Dialogue: Taiwan Film Festival, a knowledge transfer initiative launched in 2009. This year there will be three major events:

(1) Tour of Taiwanese Short Films 2010
In collaboration with the Department of Radio, Television and Film, Shih-Hsin University (Taiwan) and the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, Dr Rawnsley will conduct film screenings and give talks at the following venues:

17 February, University of Newcastle
3 March, University of Manchester
30 April, University of York
18 May, University of Oxford
8-10 June, SOAS

(2) Hull International Short Film Festival: Country in Focus - Taiwan

19-25 April 2010

Formed from a collaboration with the Hull International Short Film Festival, the Department of Radio, Television and Film, Shih-Hsin University and the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, the 15 best recently made Taiwanese short films will be screened during the forthcoming Hull International Short Film Festival. Professor Gary Rawnsley and Dr Ming-Yeh Rawnsley have secured a HEIF grant to allow two young filmmakers from Taiwan, Mr Kai-yan Yang and Miss Yan-ni Wang, to attend the Festival and visit the Insitute of Communication Studies (ICS), University of Leeds on 20 April 2010.

Short Films from Taiwan

On the occasion of the visit of two young filmakers from Taiwan to the Institute of Communication Studies, University of Leeds, the Taipei Representative Office in the UK is sponsoring a reception to facilitate exchanges between the Taiwanese filmmakers, ICS staff and students and filmmakers from the UK. The reception starts at 16:00 in the Cafe Bar, Houldsworth Building. It will be followed by a showcase of short films made by Taiwanese filmmakers and ICS students and discussion about filmmaking practices in both countries. The film screenings and discussion will take place at 16:30 in Lecture Theatre C, Houldsworth Building. All welcome.

The event is organised by Institute of Communication Studies, University of Leeds.

(3) Documentary Festival and Taiwan Study Day Phase II: Children in Contemporary Taiwan

13 November 2010

In collaboration with the White Rose East Asian Centre, University of Leeds and the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, the Study Day will screen 3 documentaries from Taiwan. Post-screening question and answer and panel discussion will offer greater depth and context and help participants further understand Taiwan. The 2010 Study Day intends to widen participation from school teachers and 16-18 year old students. Dr Rawnsley is holding screenings and talks at local schools to stimulate awareness and interest prior to the Study Day.
