Research and Innovation

Leeds has one of the largest and most dynamic philosophy communities in the UK, with members of staff active in all the main areas of the subject. Our research profile is internationally renowned, with particular strengths in aesthetics, metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of religion, and the history and philosophy of science. The government's 2014 Research Excellence Framework judges 82% of our profile to be "world leading" or "internationally excellent”. Sustaining this achievement across 25 academics submitted places Leeds joint third among 40 institutions in the UK, based on the volume of top quality research carried out in Philosophy and HPS since 2008.

Our research activities cluster around five specialist centres, offering unique opportunities to engage with some of the very best scholars in their fields:

Centre for Aesthetics | Centre for Ethics and Metaethics | Centre for History and Philosophy of Science | Centre for Metaphysics and Mind | Centre for Philosophy of Religion

The Centres organise their own research seminars and other events featuring visiting and internal speakers, in addition to a Philosophy senior seminar programme. Research falling between the Centres is supported at the School level and inter-Centre collaborations are encouraged. There are also regular cross-Centre seminars, seminars under ongoing grant projects, a series of seminars with the Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (IDEA Centre) and regular postgraduate work-in-progress seminars run by the postgraduates themselves. The annual Mangoletsi Lectures feature public lectures by prominent philosophers.

Our impact activities build on existing areas of strength to bring benefits from our research in philosophy and in history of science to non-academic groups and organisations. Our members of staff also contribute actively to the academic profession beyond Leeds.
