About the School of English

Welcome to the School of English at the University of Leeds, where a long and colourful history meets innovative teaching and ground-breaking research. Here you can benefit from supportive small group teaching, extensive resources and a stimulating environment in which to learn and grow.

Over the years we have been home to some of the greatest authors and critics in the field. J.R.R. Tolkien, Geoffrey Hill, G. Wilson Knight and A. Norman Jeffares have all taught here, and we are proud to count world-renowned writers like Wole Soyinka and Ngugi wa Thiong'o among our alumni.

Today, we offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses that emphasise choice and flexibility, allowing you to tailor your studies to best suit your interests. The expertise of our academic staff spans centuries, continents, genres and media, and their teaching represents the latest developments in their fields.

Our national and international reputation is reflected in our league table rankings:

  • Top 16 in the UK for English (The Complete University Guide 2017)
  • Top 40 in the world for English (QS World University Rankings 2016)
  • University of the Year 2017 (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide)
