What is Philosophy?

At the heart of Philosophy

Philosophy examines a range of fundamental and fascinating questions, such as:

  • What is the nature of truth?
  • What is knowledge?
  • What is time?
  • How do we know that our ideas are not illusory?
  • What is the nature of reality?
  • Are all our concepts vague?
  • Could a computer be conscious?
  • How does science work?
  • Is there a God?
  • Is war ever just?
  • Is euthanasia justified?
  • Is ancient philosophy still relevant?

These are key questions that lie at the heart of our identity, culture and existence, which have been raised by philosophers since the times of the Ancient Greeks.  Although they have been tackled in different ways through history, they remain at the core of our contemporary concerns.

Studying these questions stretches and exercises the mind in ways that give you a range of critical and transferable skills - teaching you to think, debate and communicate clearly and effectively.
