Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) at Leeds
We offer an unusually wide range of opportunities for undergraduate study, in both single and joint honours. Our exceptional breadth of expertise allows us to offer courses in all major areas in philosophy and HPS, and for those courses to be pursued in depth. We have a first-rate record in both teaching and research: in our last QAA Subject Review Report (2000) our distinctive undergraduate proctorial system was singled out for praise as "an excellent example of the School's innovative and creative attitude to developments in teaching in HE".
We pride ourselves on the Department's convivial atmosphere. At the heart of the department is a central foyer where staff and students can meet informally throughout the day. Our undergraduates run the Leeds University Philosophical Society which has a wide range of activities as well as its journal, launched in 2011.
Who can study Philosophy or History and Philosophy of Science?
All our programmes are designed for students without prior experience of philosophy or history and philosophy of science.
HPS will appeal to people who are interested in general questions about the nature science and its place in society. (See What is History and Philosophy of Science?)
Philosophy will appeal to people who are interested in fundamental questions concerning the nature of mind, morality, knowledge, truth, and reality. (See What is Philosophy?)
Our courses
We have two degree programmes for those who would like to specialise in philosophy or history and philosophy of science:
Students wishing to combine philosophy or history and philosophy with another subject would benefit from undertaking one of our diverse range of Joint Honours combinations.
Alternatively we offer the distinctive interdisciplinary degree programme BA Philosophy, Psychology &
Scientific Thought, which brings together the related subjects of
philosophy, psychology and the history and philosophy of science to focus on the twin topics of mind and knowledge.
