The Department of Philosophy is one of the largest philosophy departments in the UK, with members of staff active in all the main areas of the subject. It has an internationally renowned research profile, with particular strengths in aesthetics, metaphysics, ethics, and history and philosophy of science.

Leeds Philosophy ranks joint 6th in the UK and joint 38th in the world in the most recent Philosophical Gourmet Report, an influential reputational survey of philosophy departments worldwide. Leeds also ranks highly in a number of speciality areas. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise 65% of our research was rated "world class" or "internationally excellent" (matching the percentage of other leading UK philosophy departments such as Oxford and Cambridge). Our four research centres in Ethics and Metaethics, History and Philosophy of Science, Metaphysics and Mind and Aesthetics offer unique opportunities to engage with some of the very best scholars in their fields and receive world-class supervision.

The Department offers both taught and research study, from general and specific MA courses in Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science through to specialised PhD supervision across a wide range of topics, with a strong PhD job placement record.

Our postgraduate students benefit from a range of scholarships and funding, including AHRC Scholarships, dedicated studentships associated with particular projects, Collaborative Doctoral Awards and University and Departmental Scholarships, as well as from extensive professional development training anda lively intellectual and social environments (see Our postgraduate community).
