The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies works closely with a range of employers who host undergraduate linguists on work placements that form part of the Year Abroad. Our established relationships allow us to build up a good understanding of the companys requirements and help students make an informed decision about their suitability for the type of work on offer.
A placement student offers a source of:
Fresh ideas, enthusiasm and creativity
Up-to-date knowledge and skills
Native or near-native English speaking capacity in order to facilitate company contact with the English-speaking world
Degree-level skills in one or more modern foreign languages
Specialist knowledge of other subjects studied in combination with modern foreign languages
You may also want to use the scheme as part of an extended graduate selection procedure. After the Year Abroad, SLCS students return to Leeds for one year to complete their BA degree. On occasion students have then moved into a graduate role with the employers who hosted their Year Abroad placement.
Aims of the SLCS Year Abroad Work Placement Scheme
The Year Abroad forms an integral part of the student's programme of study and placements are of 9-12 months in duration. The scheme is an option for students of French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. It has been established to enable students to develop their linguistic skills, be exposed to different working cultures and gain experience that will be of benefit to them in their future employment.
The scheme is founded on a three-way partnership between the student, the placement provider and the University. As part of the approval process a tripartite agreement is signed confirming the terms and conditions for all three parties.
Beyond the Year Abroad Scheme
The SLCS also supports students in taking up short-term international internships during the vacation. We will be happy to publish suitable opportunities that fit in with the academic commitments of our students. Leeds term dates are published here
