Our BA Linguistics and Phonetics (single honours) gives you an in-depth understanding of the nature, structure and uses of language. You will become familiar with theoretical concepts, theory testing and argumentation, and you will have the opportunity to work with language data and to understand different methodologies in language studies. Through our option pathways, you can specialise in one of three broad areas of linguistic enquiry: the formal analysis of language structure and sound; language processing, development and evolution; or discourse studies and sociolinguistics. In your final year you will plan, carry out and write up an original research project under expert supervision by a member of staff.

Year Abroad or Year in Industry
When enrolled on the BA Linguistics and Phonetics, you will have the option to apply for a transfer to an International degree, with a year spent studying at one of a range of universities with which the University of Leeds has established links, or an Industrial degree, with a year's work placement organised through the University's Careers Centre. Both of these options convert your degree to a four-year course.
