Research
The Department of Philosophy is one of the largest and most dynamic philosophy departments in the UK, with members of staff active in all the main areas of the subject. It has an internationally renowned research profile, with particular strengths in aesthetics, metaphysics, ethics, and history and philosophy of science.
Leeds Philosophy ranks joint 6th in the UK and joint 38th in the world in the most recent Philosophical Gourmet Report [LINK], an influential reputational survey of philosophy departments worldwide. Leeds also ranks highly in a number of speciality areas [LINK]. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise [LINK] 65% of our research was rated "world class" or "internationally excellent" (matching the percentage of other leading UK philosophy departments such as Oxford and CambridgeThe Department's research activities are organised and focused around four specialist centres, offering unique opportunities to engage with some of the very best scholars in their fields.
