Our Community

History and Philosophy of Science

The Centre for HPS is host to a large postgraduate community, with students taking taught MA courses and research degrees. We offer teaching in many mainstream research areas as well as in important specialist topics. We are committed to interdisciplinary approaches, and encourage students to consider wider perspectives from the humanities and social sciences.

Taught Degrees

MA History of Science, Technology and Medicine

This course has been designed to provide an overview of the issues that concern contemporary historians  of science, technology and medicine.

You will develop specialist knowledge of the history of science, technology, and medicine, while developing skills of analysis and interpretation of historical materials. Two core modules give an excellent methodological grounding, and you can specialise by picking two further modules from an extensive list of options. You also write a research dissertation on a topic of your choice.

For more information, see Course Finder.

MA Philosophy

This MA provides you with the opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of the philosophical landscape. Our programme enables you to deepen your understanding of a wide variety of issues in analytic philosophy, either as an end in itself, or as preparation for PhD study. We draw in particular on our school's strengths in aesthetics, ethics and meta-ethics, metaphysics, mind, language, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science.

The programme consists of two core modules focusing on the recent history of analytic philosophy as well as contemporary themes, alongside a wide range of independent study options which allow you to specialise according to your interests. In addition, you will write an extended dissertation on a topic of your choice, working one-on-one with specialists in your chosen area(s).

For more information, see Course Finder.

Research Degrees

PhD, MPhil and Master by Research in History and Philosophy of Science

We offer excellent supervision and support to students undertaking research degrees in a wide range of topics.  We have also been very successful in attracting funding for our research students.

As a research student, you will be allocated a supervisor or, where appropriate, two co-supervisors with complementary expertise.  The supervisory expertise of individual members of staff within the Centre are outlined on their profile pages.
