Nursing apprentices meet Minister

Date

Nursing apprentices taught by the University had an opportunity to share their experiences with the Minister for Apprenticeships.

The Rt Hon Anne Milton was visiting the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust on Thursday.

Along with Helen Smith, Director of Student Education in the School of Healthcare, Programme Leader Lynne Veal and other senior nursing staff, the group of Registered Nursing Degree and Nursing Associate apprentices discussed wider issues around the Government apprenticeship scheme – as well as their time at Leeds.

Dr Isobel Whitehouse, Head of Learning Enhancement, said:

“The University has a strong reputation with partner trusts and extensive experience in working with adult learners to help them achieve their potential.

“Leeds has a long-standing commitment to attracting students from different backgrounds to study with us and we see degree apprenticeships as another example of this commitment."

The Registered Nursing apprentices are the first cohort of the apprenticeship programme, which is delivered by the School of Healthcare. They are employed as apprentice nurses while also undertaking a degree.

The second cohort begins in January.

Nursing Associate apprentices are taught by the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University.

Degree apprenticeships at the University of Leeds are developed in partnership with businesses and organisations.

Other courses include BSc Computer Science (Digital and Technology Solutions), BSc Chartered Manager, and MSc Senior Leadership.

Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at the University, and apprentices receive a University of Leeds degree upon successful completion of their studies.
