Biography

Antonio Martínez-Arboleda obtained a Law degree at the "Universidad de Murcia" in Spain while being actively involved in his university's Student Union as Head Delegate and working in property development. He continued his studies in the Faculty of Law at the University of Leeds where he completed his MA in Business Law in 1998.

Antonio worked for two years at the Instituto Cervantes in different areas including Library, Cultural Events, Course Administration and also taught Spanish as a Cervantes Institute Tutor at the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American Studies, which he joined in September 1998.

During his career at the University of Leeds, Antonio has been responsible for the design of the modules "Spain: Political Decentralisation (El Estado de las Autonomías) and Integration into Europe" and "Introducción al Mundo Hispano", the overall reform of the Spanish Language Programme of the Department, the introduction of IT and self-assessment tools in the Spanish Language Programme, the design of the first Spanish Language Virtual Learning Environment of the Department, the design of numerous web pages for several modules, the creation of the "Autonomous Learning Programme" for students of Spanish and the design of the Programme of Study for the Certificate in Higher Education in Spanish.

Antonio initiated and ran for two years the Language Forum of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and has been involved in a variety of artistic activities including poetry, poetry translation and singing.

Teaching

Antonio currently teaches and co-ordinates SPPO2650/1 "The Spanish Regional Melting Pot: The Same Old History?" and SPPO3062 ''Spanish in a Business and Economic Context". He also contributes regularly to team-taught modules including Spanish Language at Advanced and Higher Levels and modules on Spanish Society and Culture.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Member of the Faculty of Arts Employability Working Group;
  • Programme Manager for Spanish Studies (currently on secondment);
  • Departmental Senior Language Co-ordinator, in charge of the whole Spanish Language Programme (currently on secondment);
  • Instituto Cervantes Liaison Officer, dealing with the relationship between this Spanish Government Institution and the Department for academic, cultural and institutional matters (currently on secondment);
  • Member of the Departmental Senior Management Team. 

Student Education Research and Scholarship

Antonio' scholarship focuses in the areas of OERS (Open Educational Resources), Autonomous Learning, Student Motivation, Employability, e-Learning and Socio-constructive Approaches in Learning.

In the Spring of 2011 he was awarded a Fellowship by SCORE, the Support Centre for Open Educational Resources, funded by HEFCE and based at the Open University. As part of this fellowship, Antonio is leading the research project "Review and Endorsement of Open Educational Resources by Graduate-Recruiting Employers". In Summer 2011, the project OpenLIVES, in which Antonio is co-investigator, was awarded funding from JISC under OER-3 (Digital Capital). The project, led by the University of Southampton, will be completed in February 2013.  His responsibilities include designing learning activities for the students of the University of Leeds, the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton, as well as for the global learning community. These resources, alongside any subsequent resources produced by students, will be published as OERs in the HumBox.
