The role of geography in the development of Boiotia c.550-335BC

Supervisor

Dr Roger Brock

Research:

My research is focussed primarily on understanding the historical development and interaction of the communities of Boiotia in central Greece, using a detailed understanding of the physical environment as a foundation. Through looking at the development of the area in detail over several centuries and more broadly over la longe durée, I hope to be able to construct a model of epichoric history that allows the lacunae in the traditional evidence of this important area to be overcome. To do this it will be necessary to employ much theory and methods from outside Classics, particularly those of postmodern geography and social sciences. I was recently interviewed on my experience of the PhD and the department of Classics at Leeds for the Faculty of Arts website.

Teaching:

I have been lucky enough to be trusted with many interesting and diverse teaching roles thus far. I have developed and taught a series of seminars designed to extend the critical parameters of the Undergraduate Scholars in the Classics Department, emphasising the strengths of Classics as a discipline and harnessing its innate interdisciplinarity. I developed these into a series of seminars across a range of Arts departments and the scheme will be rolled out to 8 departments in 2011-12. It was featured in May 2011 by the Leeds University Reporter and further details of the scheme can be found on the PASS website.  I also relished the opportunity to lecture in archaeology at the University of Chester in 2009/10, to an excellent and inquisitive group. I continue to enjoy the many Teaching Assistant opportunities afforded to me in various courses within the Department.
