PhD: The Ethics of Surveillance
Supervisors: Dr Chris Megone, Dr Robin Le Poidevin, Dr Rob Lawlor.
I am working towards a PhD on the ethics of surveillance, attempting to develop a framework by which surveillance can be assessed from an ethical perspective. The UK as a nation is subject to more surveillance than anywhere else on the globe. Questions that interest me include who is carrying out surveillance, why are they doing it, how apparent is it, and what are the reasons for doing it. There is surprisingly little written on this subject, especially from the perspective of applied philosophy.
Subito
Project lead: Dr David Hogg
I took a 4-month break from the PhD in 2011 to work on an FP-7 EU Security Project (SUBITO) regarding the ethics of automating surveillance. This resulted in a 40-page paper, a section of which I shall be presenting at the International Association of Computing and Philosophy in Aarhus, Denmark in July 2011.
Teaching
I currently lecture in computing and engineering ethics (including military research and weapons design) at L1-4 and tutor in L2 philosophy of religion. I have taught medical, dental and environmental ethics, and L2 political philosophy. I was the module leader for a L2 course in Security and World Politics at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2009-10.
