Thesis Title

The Telegraphic Life - Recovering the Work of Submarine Cable Technicians, 1850-1914

Research overview

I am researching into the lives, working practices and the technology of those at the "coal face" of submarine cable telegraphy: the electricians, engineers, cable jointers and operators, in the Victorian era.

I will be interrogating the archives of the Cable & Wireless and Telcon companies at the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Cornwall, the Mersey Maritime Museum (Liverpool), the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich), the archives of the Science Museum (Wroughton) and the Institute of Engineering Technology (formerly the IEE, London)

I am a Chartered Engineer and have just retired from being a Consultant in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Palliative Medicine.

I have published around 30 papers, chapters and books - mainly related to engineering in medicine. I am Hon Editor for the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum.
