Ben De Vere White

BA Lingusitics and South East Asian Studies

Summary: Ben shares his top tips for new students and his favourite things to do in Leeds.

Why did you decide to study here?
I chose to study at The University of Leeds because it offers one of the best choices of languages in the UK so I knew the Linguistics and South East Asian Studies course would be brilliant. In addition, Leeds has an excellent reputation as being a great place to live.

What are your top-tips for new students?
Join the gym, eat well and don’t drink too much!

As soon as your student loan goes in, don't spend it all in TK Maxx.

What's the best thing about Leeds University?
It’s a fantastic campus with a rich and cultural history. The libraries are amazing too- there are 3 and there are plenty of books. Finally, the town centre is only 20 minutes away so it’s so easy to pick up some bits!

What's the best thing about your course?
The contact hours. The East Asian Studies department is small so it’s very personal. Everybody knows everybody else by name and there is a great atmosphere to study in.

What university clubs and societies are you a member of? (if applicable)
I didn’t have time to join any as the joint honours degree is very demanding!

Give an example of one of your favourite things to do in Leeds.
I love shopping or going into Leeds; it is easy to get to and everything is within walking distance. If someone wants to meet you, you can always say ‘see you 20 minutes’ – because nothing’s ever too far away!
