My thesis is entitled Tony Kushner: Legacy and Reading (previously titled Tony Kushner: Legacy, Reading, Performance). It explores the representation of legacy in selected plays and films by US playwright Tony Kushner. Defined as both the action or act of bequeathing, and as anything passed down from an ancestor or predecessor, legacy can refer to diverse objects, actions, and representational forms. I seek to trace Kushners interrogation of both the concept of legacy, and the movement of transmission and reception associated with it. Legacy, I further argue, is integrally entangled with processes of reading, performance, and performativity.
I am supervised by Dr. Denis Flannery.
I completed my BA, Honours and Masters degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg. My Masters by Research is entitled Image and Poetry in Selected Early Works of William Blake: Producing a Third Text, and was passed with distinction.
I am funded by the Leeds International Research Scholarship (Sept 2013-2016), with additional funding from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (2013).
During my Masters I was awarded a place in the Mellon Postgraduate Mentorship Scheme for two years (2010-2011). This was awarded concurrently to my MA supervisors Prof. Merle Williams and Prof. Anitra Nettleton.
I have also been the recipient of a number of other scholarships, including the University of the Witwatersrand Postgraduate Merit Award (2008-2010), the Doris and Harold Tothill Scholarship (2009), the University of the Witwatersrand Council Merit Scholarship (2007), and the E A H Loerincz Scholarship (2006).
