Summary: Post-doctoral Research Fellow Personal research project: "Crossing the Alps with Dante: Preaching the Commedia in Fifteenth-Century Europe" (NWO Rubicon grant)

After a MA in Theology and a second MA in Italian Linguistic and Literary Civilizations, in 2016 I obtained a doctorate in History cum laude from Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands). Thanks to a Rubicon fellowship of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), since 2015 I am a post-doctoral fellow at the Leeds Humanities Research Institute − School of Languages, Cultures and Societies of the University of Leeds. My actual research project entitles Crossing the Alps with Dante: Preaching Dante’s Commedia in Fifteenth-Century Europe (see below).

My research interests include late medieval and early modern preaching, religious theatre, medieval biblical studies, the Observant movement, and late medieval social history. I am particularly interested in the interaction between different media in medieval religious communication (sermons, religious plays, images, devotional texts, early printed books).  These research interests are reflected in my first monograph Lazzaro e il ricco epulone: Metamorfosi di una parabola fra Quattro e Cinquecento (Bologna: Il Mulino, 2014), and in the book that I am currently finishing, titled In the Mirror of the Prodigal Son: The Pastoral Uses of a Biblical Narrative (1200-1550) (Brill, forthcoming).

My current main research project:

‘Crossing the Alps with Dante: Preaching Dante’s Commedia in Fifteenth-Century Europe’

In this project, I nvestigate the early diffusion of the Commedia outside Italy via sermons, and its role in public religious discourse. The focus of the research is on the Quadragesimale peregrini cum angelo, an anonymous fifteenth-century Dantesque sermon collection, which presents a very creative re-telling of Dante’s poem by adopting his itinerary through hell, purgatory, and paradise as narrative framework for an entire Lenten sermon collection. The Quadragesimale peregrini, though being manifestly elaborated in Italy, found an unexpected diffusion in the south of Germany, so the study of its circulation promises to shed light on early international reception of the Commedia.
