Sam Platt

BA French and Russian B

Summary: Read Sam's experience of studying French and Russian at Leeds here.

I wanted to study at Leeds because it provided the right course for me as well as a vibrant and exciting city to live in. The combinations available within the joint honours courses were impressive at Leeds and this was very important to me. The teaching on my course is excellent but the best thing would have to be the year abroad. It is an unrivalled experience that taught me a great deal. I spent my year abroad studying at the Moscow State University in Russia. The opportunity to live in a country with a completely different culture to the UK was definitely the best thing about the year abroad, I certainly got this from living in Russia and it is one of the reasons I chose to study languages.

To all new students I would say just get involved! Life at university has so much to offer and it is important to try to be a part of it. Each department has its own society and there are plenty of other societies available through the Student’s Union too. There are societies for all sorts of things and they are a great way to meet lots of different people with similar interests. I am a member of French Soc, Slav Soc and Intra-mural rugby union.

Leeds University has a very vibrant campus. There are always different and interesting events happening throughout the day and on an evening. The city of Leeds itself is a fantastic place to live and there are lots of students around giving it a great atmosphere. When it's sunny there is nothing better than hanging out in Hyde Park with friends.
