Elena Gibson

BA English and History of Art

Summary: Find out why the English department was the main reason Elena chose to study here and what she thinks is the best thing about Leeds

Why did you choose to study at Leeds?

Primarily for the quality of my course - the English department was rated amongst the top ten in the RAE 2008. I was also excited to be in a large, busy and vibrant city. My initial tour of the university assured me of the possibilities and potential of studying at Leeds. I had also heard nothing but praise from friends of mine who were past students here.

Do you have a top-tip for new students?

My top-tip would be, to be brave and explore Leeds and discover all it has to offer: nightlife, theatre, opera, galleries and the beautiful Yorkshire countryside surrounding Leeds - to name but a few!

What do you particularly enjoy doing on campus?

Visiting the Union because there is always something going on; people can find their niche whatever it is from political campaigns to RAG activities - and so much more!

And what about your course?

The best thing about my course is the range of modules on offer.  I have been able to study an interesting mix of topics and engage with them on a variety of levels.  My confidence has grown through seminar tuition and presentation work. All my lecturers are passionate about their subjects, so I feel encouraged every step of the way.

Are you a member of any clubs and societies?

Yes, I was Publicity Officer for SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) in my second year and I am now President of the History of Art Society.  I was also involved with the Social Enterprise Society and even dabbled in the Photography Society.

What are the cultural highlights of Leeds?

I really enjoy visiting the theatres in Leeds, there are so many: Stage@Leeds, The Grand, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Carraigeworks - to name but a few! I have been to the opera several times, Opera North are based in Leeds, and they are an excellent company.
