Frances Roberts

BA English and Philosophy

Summary: Frances explains why the range of elective modules attracted her to Leeds and what she enjoys most about her English and Philosophy course!

Overview

Hi Frances, so could you tell us why you decided to study here?

To be honest, my main reason for choosing to study at Leeds was the wide range of elective modules I could choose from. I knew I wanted to study English and Philosophy as a joint honours degree, but I also really wanted to carry on with my French studies (or even try a new subject), and out of all of my UCAS choices Leeds was the only university which gave me the option of picking up a third subject through elective modules.

Do you have any top tips for prospective students?

  1. Spend fresher’s week talking to as many people as you can and join societies so you can meet even more people!
  2. Learn to cook some basic meals before you arrive
  3. Work out a budget for your first term so you don’t run out of money halfway through.

Great tips! So, what’s the best thing about university for you?

Definitely living with friends! It means there is always someone around to talk to or do something with so you never feel alone.

And what about your course, what's your favourite thing about that?

The seminars are exciting because you get to discuss the things which interest you with likeminded people, and so I can honestly say that I never get bored, however the best thing about my course is that I get to study two subjects that I really enjoy, English and Philosophy!

Are you a member of any societies?

Yes, I am a member of Leeds University Athletics team which is where I made some of my really good friends, and it keeps me fit, and I get to travel to lots of exciting different places to compete. I also belong to Leeds University Vegetarian society, where I learn how to cook lots of new foods.

And, finally, could you give us an example of one of your favourite things to do in Leeds?

I really enjoy going to the German Christmas Market in the city centre with my housemates then going ice skating in Millennium square after.
