I am a lecturer in French Studies and Translation at Universidad Complutense, Madrid. As Visiting Fellow at the University of Leeds, with my colleague Dr Stuart Green I convene the European Popular Music Research Group (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/arts/homepage/431/european_popular_musics).

Biography

After completing a degree in Hispanic Studies at Universidad de Salamanca (Spain) and a degree and a Masters in Translation Studies at École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT), Paris, I worked as a translator and as an editor for two years. In 2002, I was appointed Teaching Fellow in Translation Studies in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a post I held until 2009. I completed my PhD in French Studies in 2007 at  Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2009, I joined the Department of French as Lecturer in French, specializing in contemporary culture, literature, language and translation.

In 2011, I was awarded a research grant by the Spanish Ministry of Higher Education, which allowed me to work in Leeds for four months. During that stay, I was able to create the European Popular Music Research Group within the PCRN. Since then, I have been working in various projects with colleagues in the French and Spanish Department of the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. More recently, in 2014, I received a Leverhulme Researh Grant to undertake at UoL a project on the reception of French and Spanish popular music in contemporary Britain and the cultural policies related to their promotion and diffusion.

Research Interests

One of my lines of research concerns French popular culture in general and French popular music in particular, with a special interest in the relation between aesthetics and identity and between ‘high-brow’ culture and ‘low-brow’ culture. I have published on related topics such as French old school rap, intertextuality, intermediality, humour, gender and nostalgia in French popular music.

I am also interested in cultural transfer in the realm of popular culture and popular music in the European context. I have published several articles on the influence of French culture on the Spanish popular music scene, and on the dynamics of such transfer.

These interests come together in my participation in European Popular Music Research Group, which I convene with my colleague Dr Stuart Green (University of Leeds). In this role, I organized an international symposium (University of Leeds, June 2011) and an international conference (University of Leeds, September 2012) (From Adele to Zeca Afonso: The Singer-Songwriter in Europe). As outcome of our project, are a special volume on European Popular Music published in the Journal of European Popular Culture (Intellect) and the edited monographThe Singer-Songwriter in Europe. Paradigms, politics and place, published by Routdlege. 2016 (https://www.routledge.com/products/9781472452108).

Most recently, I have been looking at cultural policies in the realm of popular cultures and especially popular music thanks to my Leverhulme Fellowship at the UoL.
