CAVA kicked off its research programme in 1999 by examining existing theories, methodologies and research findings relevant to CAVA’s concerns. This review - taking the form of deliberative workshops attended by CAVA members and their colleagues - enabled the research team to develop a conceptual framework for the ensuing research programme and examine and draw together relevant research on Care, Values and Social Policy.

Of the 6 workshops hosted between October 1999 and June 2000, a total of 28 papers were delivered. The workshops were arranged around 6 themes and papers from each workshop can be accessed by clicking on the relevant title:

Workshop One

Frameworks for Understanding Policy and Culture

Workshop Two

Statistics and Theories for Understanding Social Change

Workshop Three

Analysing Policy Change and Implementation

Workshop Four

Methodologies for Researching Moral Agency

Workshop Five

New Conceptualisations of Care, Values and Welfare

Workshop Six

Cross-National Perspectives and Issues

Please note, Workshop 4 also hosted the discussion about localities – that is, which areas CAVA would undertake the empirical projects for Strand 3 – based on a statistic analysis of the 1991 census data completed by Simon Duncan and Darren Smith.
