Please see the main Entry Requirements section for information about the academic, experience and residence requirements for clinical psychology courses. The information below provides additional guidance for international students about the academic qualifications required.
Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC, or GBR as it was previously known) is a standard set by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It ensures that, before anyone can start a clinical psychology course, they have already studied psychology in sufficient breadth and depth to provide a sound basis for their postgraduate training and professional practice.
If your qualifications are from a UK or Irish university please see the main Entry Requirements section for further information about GBC.
If your qualifications are not from a UK or Irish university you need to have them assessed by the BPS to see if they give you GBC. You must do this by applying for Graduate Membership of the BPS. They will automatically assess your qualifications for GBC as part of your Graduate Membership application.
Just belonging to the BPS is not enough to allow you to apply for a clinical psychology course: you must also have GBC. This is because just belonging to the BPS does not require the breadth and depth of psychological knowledge that you will need as a basis for your clinical training and professional practice.
Please contact the BPS for information on how to apply for Graduate Membership and GBC. Membership/GBC applications can take some time to process so you should apply as soon as possible, preferably before making your Clearing House application.
If your qualifications meet the requirements, the BPS will write to you telling you that you have GBC. If possible, you should provide a copy of this document with your Clearing House application (see the Documents section for further details). However, your Clearing House application must be submitted by the closing date of 1.00pm (UK time) on 29 November 2017. If necessary you can submit your Clearing House application without the BPS document and then send us a copy when you receive it.
If your qualifications do not meet the requirements for GBC you will need to take a conversion course. The BPS has a list of conversion courses in the Become a Psychologist section of their website.
If you are unsure which qualifications and grades from your country are at a similar level to UK qualifications we suggest you contact either of the following for advice:
