The exact starting date varies from centre to centre but all courses start between early September and mid-October 2020 and have only one intake per academic year.
There is no system of deferred entry. If you do not take up your place in autumn 2020 you will normally be expected to re-apply the following year. Course centres may occasionally allow deferred entry in unforeseen circumstances but this is not the norm.
The majority of courses require you to have a minimum of 12 months relevant experience for your application to be considered. Please see the Entry Requirements section for further details.
Universities will not usually allow you to enrol on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology if at that time you are enrolled on any other degree, eg a PhD or Masters programme. If you have any outstanding requirements from another programme when the clinical courses start, you may be required to withdraw from that programme in order to take up a place or to continue your studies on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Please see the Courses section for further details of the requirements of individual course centres.
If you will complete your psychology degree or your conversion course in autumn 2019 and get your results by the end of January 2020, you can apply this year. Please submit your application by the closing date: 1:00pm (UK time) on 27 November 2019. When you get your results in December 2019/January 2020 please send us copies of the following documents as soon as possible. We can then add them to your application before it is released to the course centres by the end of January. (Please see the Documents section if you need more information about the items required.)
If you will not complete your qualification until autumn 2020 you cannot apply this year because you will not have your results, and therefore will not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), before the courses start. (Please see the Entry Requirements section if you need more information about GBC.)
If you will complete your psychology degree or your conversion course in spring/summer 2020, you will not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) when you apply. (Please see the Entry Requirements section if you need more information about GBC.) Some courses consider people who do not have GBC when they apply, but the majority do not. Please see the Courses section for further details of the requirements of individual course centres.
If the courses you are interested in accept applications from people who do not have GBC yet, you must ensure that you will have GBC in place before the courses start. In practice, this means that you must have completed your qualification and got your results by the end of August 2020. If you will not get your results until autumn 2020 you cannot apply this year because you will not have GBC before the courses start.
Please note that very few people who do not have GBC when they apply are successful eg only four have been accepted to NHS places nationally in the last five years. (People currently training as clinical psychologists are employed by the NHS. These arrangements may be amended for candidates entering training in 2020, but this is unclear at this stage. Please see the Funding page for more information.)
