Translation Ethics for Professional Translators Workshop

Workshop leaders:
The event will be led by two National Teaching Fellows: Director of the IDEA-CETL, ethicist Prof Christopher Megone, and Dr Jo Drugan, of the Centre for Translation Studies.

Have you come across ethical issues in your professional practice of translation which you’ve struggled to resolve?

This one-day workshop will bring together specialists from the national Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Applied Ethics (IDEA-CETL), translation academics who research ethical issues and professional translators/interpreters. We will identify common ethical challenges in professional translation and consider practical approaches to resolving these satisfactorily.

Participants are encouraged to bring real-world problems they have encountered for discussion (these may be contributed anonymously in advance, if you prefer: email j.drugan@leeds.ac.uk). Interpreters and translators are equally welcome: small break-out groups will allow participants to work with colleagues from related fields.

The Translation Ethics Workshop is recommended for both new entrants to the profession and established practitioners and counts as one day of CPD for ITI members.

A delegation of high profile representatives from the UN, African Union Commission, OECD, ILO and EU language services visit Leeds as part of a CTS workshop for international organisations. The purpose of the workshop is twofold. Academics from CTS will offer machine translation evaluation or English language enhancement workshops for the delegates in order to improve their professional skills. In return, the visitors will share their work experience with CTS students in the language skills needed for work in international organisations. These include skills in translation, documentation, précis writing, verbatim reporting and conference interpreting. The aim of the event is to further develop knowledge transfer with international organisations as well as to explore the contribution international organisations can make to novel teaching resources for CTS and SMLC students. It is envisaged that such resources will augment research activities in CTS, in turn underpinning research-led teaching.
