Debby Phillips

Debby has a BA in Women’s Studies and Social Policy from the University of Bradford, an MA in Disability Studies from the University of Leeds and recently completed her PhD thesis on women, learning difficulties and identity. She has previously worked in a variety of settings: with people labelled as having ‘learning difficulties’, self advocacy and women’s groups, and as a college lecturer involved in a range of community outreach projects. She teaches disability studies on the MA programme.

Research and academic projects include developing participatory research practice, biographical/narrative methods of inquiry, gender issues, feminist theory, and concepts of ‘embodiment’. Debby has a particular interest in incorporating social model principles into the arena of ‘learning difficulties’, both in the UK and more widely.
