Web pages relating to the British Education Index (BEI) and its associated information services, including Education-line, are being redesigned for presentation in a more coherent site from June 2001. Users may notice some inconsistencies and minor failures while the work is in progress. The new site will first be visible in public at the Library and Information Show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham on 5-7 June 2001. |

The BEI office is instrumental in leading a Joint Information Systems Committee project to establish an education "portal" within the Resource Discovery Network. The first deliverable from the project will be an internet resource catalogue, an early version of which will be visible to the public at the Library and Information Show, More information about the British Education Portal project can be found on its official project page. The Distributed National Electronic Resource (DNER) site also contains information about many projects with which the portal project is associated. |

The second Qualitative Evidence-based Practice Conference "Taking a critical stance", meets in the Techno Centre at Coventry University between May 16 and May 18 this year. As last year it has a fully searchable programme on-line, to be followed by links to the full texts of papers as they become available. |

104 full text BERA conference papers and 80 ECER papers from last year's conferences are now linked to their entries in the conference databases. They can also be browsed by clicking on BERA-2000 or ECER-2000. Papers from either conference are still very welcome. |

October usually sees an increase in Education-line usage. October 2000 database search figures are 120% up on October 1999, which itself was 27% up on 1998. More details and a graph are available here. |

Papers from the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference in Cardiff are now going on line. They join nearly a thousand other conference papers in the Education-line collection. Each full paper is linked to the BERA 2000 search page, where all titles, authors and abstracts can be found. |

Education-line now has a searchable conference programme for the European Conference on Educational Research that takes place between September 20th and 23rd. Edinburgh's Year 2000 event is hosted by the Scottish Educational Research Association. Searches can be made according to title, author, session or network. All abstracts are also available. Authors are encouraged to send full texts of their presentations for inclusion in the main database |

A number of technical changes are being made to the databases and web pages associated with the British Education Index and Education-line. Papers included in Education-line have been catalogued by the British Education Index since October 1999. The on-line BEI, available via the BIDS Education Data Service has already started to include full bibliographic details and urls for each Education-line paper. Print editions will include them from the next issue. (Volume 36 No 2) |

SCUTREA's 30th Annual Conference takes place at the University of Nottingham between the 3rd and 5th of July. The searchable programme for SCUTREA 2000 is now on-line. The full text of each paper is linked to its record in the conference database. |

We apologise for the loss of access to Education-line databases during the 22nd April. Major electrical safety work over the holiday weekend at the University of Leeds resulted in the web server being unavailable for most of Saturday. The service is now back to normal. |

Logs for March 2000 show visitors to Education-line coming from from more than 7,500 separate internet addresses in 76 different countries. Database search events for the month stand at 32,874 - exceeding last months record total by 22% |

Full text papers from 1999's British and European Educational Research Associations' Annual Conferences are still coming in to the Education-line collection. Over a hundred papers from each conference are now linked to their respective conference proceedings and all can be found by title, author, subject term or free text search in the main database |

Conference organisers can submit details of future conferences directly to the Education-line Conference Listings through an on-line form that has recently been updated to work with all common web browsers. |

February 2000 was the busiest ever month for the Education-line service. For the first time the number of search steps in the BRS database exceeded 25,000 with a total of 26,997 steps being recorded over the 29 days. Approximately 2,700 separate visits were involved, with more than 5,400 retrievals of full text documents resulting from the searches. The main database now contains 1,354 documents and the conference database contains 4,484 records. A graph shows the pattern of use since January 1997 |

In the change to self-funded status, Education-line is gradually adopting a new set of web pages. We hope that the new pages are simpler to use and faster to load. We would be pleased to get feedback from users who find that the designs do not work well on their browser. |

Education-line entered the year 2000 with its first user searching the database at 03.23 Greenwich Mean Time on January 1st. Full responsibility for the service will be taken over by the British Education Index at the end of January and continuing free access is assured. Document acquisition and search activity continue to increase in scale. Document number 1,315 was entered on January 14th. Search figures for December 1999 were up by 45% on the previous December and continue to grow at a rate of 10% per month. Further development is planned. |

In consultation with the journal School Leadership and Management Education-line has created a subject-specific search page to discover the documents most likely to be of interest to readers and would-be readers of that journal. Researchers, school managers and school governors are among those who are encouraged to use it. Feedback to Education-line is always welcome - especially when it identifies problems and shortcomings. Following the European Conference on Educational Research in Finland a preface to and listing of 38 full text papers presented to Network 2 (Vocational Education and Training) is included in the Education-line database. Other full text papers are being linked to the conference records as they are put on -line. |

Authors are encouraged to send an electronic version of their presentation as an email attachment to education-line@leeds.ac.uk. The full conference programme is searchable through the Education-line Conference Service. |

The Education-line guidelines for submission have been updated, principally through the addition of a link to a draft acquisition policy that has been discussed by the Education-line Advisory Committee. Education-line users are invited to submit comments. |

The conference programme for ECER 99, the European Conference on Educational Research 1999 can be searched on-line. Papers can be listed by author, title, session or network. Free text searching is also available. Abstracts will be added during August and authors are invited to submit full papers for archiving. The Conference takes place in Lahti, Finland between September 22nd and 25th. |

Researching Vocational Education and Training - The Third International Conference organised by the Journal of Vocational Education and Training is being held at the GMB College, Whalley Range, Manchester between July 14th and 16th 1999. The Conference programme can be searched on-line, and 2,000 word summaries of most of the papers are now available. |

The Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults (SCUTREA) 29th Annual Conference takes place at the University of Warwick between July 5th and 8th. The Conference proceedings can be searched and all papers are on-line in advance of the conference. |

Speeches by Secretary of State David Blunkett MP, David Willetts MP (Conservative), Don Foster MP (Liberal Democrat) and Charles Handy (Conference President) are among the eight keynote speeches available. |

Education-line has added a Frequently Asked Questions page. It gives basic answers to most of the things that we are commonly asked. There is also an on-line form for readers to submit further questions, or to make other comments about the service. |

This year's North of England Education Conference is being held in the City of Sunderland between January 6th and 8th. The theme is "Education for Renewal : Radical Change for the Public Good". Education-line hopes to be able to archive keynote and seminar papers as they become available. The Conference Office are planning to publish papers as soon as they are available on the Conference website. |

Education-line has been live on the Internet for two years now. At least 1,000 documents per week are being downloaded ( see graph) and the service is listed on hundreds of homepages and "useful links" pages around the world. A good recent example is the link on BBC Education Scotland's website, which is a very useful resource in its own right. |

Phil Sheffield (Education-line Project Manager) and Sam Saunders (Project Officer) are sharing a platform with Stevan Harnad and Dan Fleming at this month's "Information Ecologies" Conference in York, organised by the Electronic Libraries Programme. The panel is set to discuss "Informal publishing". |

An update on levels of database searching shows that 10,000 separate internet addresses have made search requests to Education-line since the service was launched. 300 visitors per week are now using the search facilities to search either the main database of full texts or the Conference database for details of particular education conferences. |

The British Education Index incorporating Education-line will be presenting a workshop at the European Conference for Educational Research in Ljubljana between September 17th and September 20th. The workshop will offer hands-on access to both Education-line and the BEI, with an opportunity for discussion of more general questions arising from educational researchers' use of the internet. Approximately 150 submissions of evidence to the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (the Dearing Committee) have been added to the Education-line database. Each record is a part of the main database, but the whole body of evidence can be searched as a separate set of documents from a special search page. |

Education-line published its 500th document on Monday March 2nd 1998. Tuesday March 3rd saw the 100th full text document from the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference for 1997. |
