MA American Literature
Compulsory core modules: Themes and Perspectives in Contemporary America (Sem
1), Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Students then
take three further option modules, of which at least two are taken from those
offered
by the MA in American Literature, i.e. Writing about Death in 19th Century
America; Islands, Ghettos, Patches: Space and Freedom in Black Atlantic Prose
1938-2000; All that they Enfold: Henry James’s “The Wings of the
Dove"; Fictions of Citizenship. The third option module can be taken
from this list or from those offered by the other MA schemes in the School
or from
those available in other departments (subject to co-ordinator’s approval).
MA English Language
Compulsory core modules: Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1 & 2),
Language in Society (Sem 1); Text Linguistics (Sem 2). Students take two further
modules of which at least one is taken from those offered by the MA in English
Language in 2009-10 i.e. Literary Stylistics; Forensic Linguistics. The second
option module may be taken from this list or from those offered by other MA
schemes within the school, or from those available in other departments (subject
to co-ordinator’s approval), such as the School of Education.
MA English Literature
Compulsory core modules: Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2).
Students then take four further modules from the complete list of those offered
within the School (except where stated otherwise), or one may be taken from
those available in other departments, subject to co-ordinators’s approval.
MA English Renaissance Literature
Compulsory core modules: Reading the Renaissance (Sem 1), Research
Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Students then take three further modules,
at least two of which are taken from those offered by the MA in English Renaissance
Literature i.e. Arts of Renaissance Kingship; Love, Sex and Marriage; Shakespeare
and the Medieval World; Religion, Society and the Individual. The third module
can be taken from this list or from those offered by other MA schemes within
the School, or from those available in other departments (subject to co-ordinator’s
approval).
MA Modern and Contemporary Literature
Compulsory core modules: Modern to Contemporary (Sem 1), Research
Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Students then take three further
modules, of which at least two are taken from those offered by the MA in Modern
and Contemporary Literature i.e. Culture and Anarchy: 1945-1968; The Enigmatic
Body of Modernism; A Modernist at the Margins: D.H. Lawrence; Caribbean
and Black British Writing; Graham Greene; Psychoanalysis in Cultural Theory.
The 3rd module can be taken from this list or from those offered by the other
MA schemes in the School, or from those available in other departments (subject
to co-ordinator’s approval).
MA Postcolonial Literary & Cultural Studies
Compulsory core modules: Postcolonial Representations (Sem 1), Research
Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Students then take three further
modules, of which at least two are taken from those offered by the MA in Postcolonial
Literary and Cultural Studies, i.e. Caribbean and Black British Writing;
Postcolonialism, Animals and the Environment; Postcolonial Cultures of Encounter
and Settlement; Representing Kashmir: desirable landscapes, disposable bodies;
Reading African Cultures; Bollywood Calling: Hindi Commercial cinema and Indian
Society. The third module can be taken from this list or from those offered
by the other MA schemes in the School, or from those available in other departments
(subject to co-ordinator’s approval).
MA Romantic Formations (Romantic Literature and Culture with
effect from 2010)
Compulsory modules: Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Romantic
Identities (Sem 1). Students then take three modules from the range offered
by the MA in Romantic Formations, i.e. Nation and Empire in British Romantic
Writing; Gender and Romanticism; Sympathy, Suffering and Death in Romantic
Period literature; Sensibility and Society, 1744-1811; William Blake: Word
and Vision. One of the three option modules may be taken from among the
range offered by other MA schemes within the school or from those offered by
other departments
(subject to co-ordinator’s approval).
MA Theatre Making: Critical Engagement with Creative Practice
Compulsory core modules: Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Theatre
Practice I, Theatre Practice II. Students then take two further modules
in Theatre Making from the following: Uses of Theatre, Text, Design, Performance;
Making Theatre in the Community; Site, Identity, Performance. One module can
be taken from the range of modules offered by other MA schemes within the School
or from another department (subject to approval by the Director of Theatre
Studies). Option module descriptions are listed in this booklet but students
on this scheme should consult the Theatre Studies Booklet (which will be provided
separately) for further information on core modules and scheme requirements.
MA Theatre and Development Studies
Compulsory core modules: Development Theories, Strategies and Issues; Making
Theatre in the Community; Uses of Theatre; Research Methods and Dissertation. Students also take one 30 credit module from the list of options available
from POLIS. Further information will be provided separately.
MA Victorian Literature
Compulsory core modules: Reading Victorian Literature: History, Text and
Context (Sem 1), Research Methods and Dissertation (Sem 1& 2). Students then take
a further three modules, of which at least two are taken from those offered
by the MA in Victorian Literature, i.e. Imperial Masculinities, The Brontës;
Apprentices to Life: ‘Bildungsroman’ in 19th Century Fiction; The
Reading Revolution in the Victorian Period; All that they Enfold: Henry James’s “The
Wings of the Dove”. The third option module may be taken either from
this list or from those offered by other schemes within the department, or
from those available in other departments (subject to co-ordinator’s
approval).
For all MA schemes students must take 180 credits. Core and Option modules are worth 30 credits, the Dissertation/Research Methods is worth 60 credits.
