Our aim is to undertake responsible energy management by taking positive action in reducing the university’s energy consumption and hence our carbon emissions across all buildings in the Estates portfolio.
The University’s energy consumption has increased over the past years largely as a result of an increase in building stock, student numbers and an increase in activity generally within buildings.
In 2010/11 the university’s energy bill was over £10million and with energy prices set to rise by 18% in 2011/12 this upward trend is set to continue.
The university has adopted a challenging target to reduce its carbon emissions by 35% by 2020/21 equivalent to 24,000 tonnes.
With the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) and associated charges the university can expect additional costs of around £650,000 in 2012/13, possibly rising in subsequent years as the charge per tonne increases.
