Cycle lockers on campus

"Due to its simple design, universal use and environmentally friendliness the bicycle was named the most significant innovation since 1800."

Cycling

Cyclists are usually the quickest commuters in an urban environment. By cycling you can achieve a higher level of fitness and save money at the same time. That is reason enough to support them by offering secure parking, training and discounted bicycles.

UTravelActive

UTravelActive is the active travel project co-ordinates by the University of Leeds with the aim of increasing walking and cycling levels of staff and students. The project is part-funded by the Big Lottery and partners include Leeds Metropolitan University, Sustrans and Leeds City Council. For all partners, progress and other updates go to the UTravelActive homepage.

Velocampus Leeds

Velocampus Leeds is part of the UTravelActive project. 100 brand-new city bikes are available for students to hire for a whole year including locks, lights and maintenance. All details are available on www.leeds.ac.uk/velocampus.

Cycle to work for employees

Every spring and autumn staff are given the opportunity to acquire a brand-new bicycle from Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative at a reduced cost. The University buys the bike and hires it to the employee over a period of 18 months. Rates are taken from the gross salary saving on income tax and national insurance. All details are available on the Cycle to Work page.

Cycling allowance

Employees who cycle on university business are able to claim an allowance of 20p/mile by completing the usual travel and subsistence expenses form. This does not include commuting to work.

Cycle parking

Cycle racks, freely available to use, are distributed throughout the campus, as well as more secure storage in form of cages or individual lockers. For location see the University cycling and walking map.

Some secure facilities are managed locally. For centrally managed secure facilities, a £20 deposit is required for a key fob for access to a cage, and there is an annual hire charge of £25 for a locker. At present there is a waiting list for lockers. If you would like access these more secure facilities please contact transport@leeds.ac.uk.

Please report any cycle crime to the Police on 0845 6060606. On campus also report the matter to the University security team on 0113 34 35494/5. Safer Leeds (www.bikeregister.com) offers bike markings for a subsidised rate of £3.50. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this service should contact West Yorkshire Police via email. The coding will help the police to return the bike when recovered.

Showers

Showers are available free of charge in the Sports Centre and Cromer Terrace Gym between 7.45-10.00 or for a charge of £1 at any other time and for non sport users. Other showers are located in the Students Union (after 9am) and in EC Stoner (level 7, 8 and 11). Most buildings provide facilities for departmental staff and postgraduates. These can be accessed by contacting your Environmental Co-ordinator. For all cycle facility locations please refer to the University cycle map.

Cycle guides, maps and other information are available from transport@leeds.ac.uk.
