Fast buses in Leeds

Public transport

Due to its central location the University has good bus and train connections. Public transport has many advantages over the car; no parking space is required, no congestion and hence better punctuality plus it is cheaper if you consider all costs of a car. You can save even more money if you take advantage of the University offers.

MetroCard Tickets

Staff

MetroCards allow you to travel on virtually all buses in West Yorkshire and on trains in the purchased rail zone. University staff receive a 15% discount on West Yorkshire MetroCards. This discount is kindly offered by Metro, the West Yorkshire public transport body, for our commitments in delivering the University's transport plan. Costs are deducted from your salary and spread over the year so you save even more in comparison to a monthly ticket. To take advantage of the scheme, please contact the Staff Benefit Team (Human Resources) who will require you to complete their form and give them two passport-sized photographs. Their reception is located on level 11 in the EC Stoner Building.
Zones, prices, application deadlines and all other information is available from the benefits website.

Students

Tickets for virtually all buses and trains in West Yorkshire are available to all those under 22 years or anyone in full-time education. MetroCards are available at Metro Travel Centres, bus and rail stations and post offices. All you need is the completed application form, a photo, ID for those under 22 years and student ID for those above.

First tickets

Staff

For those who use the bus only there is also a FirstYear Card, which is for the use on their buses in West Yorkshire only. The price for a discounted annual FirstYear Card is £500. Payment can be made in monthly instalments by standing order from your bank account, but not direct from your salary. For further details contact Human Resources on x33969.

Students

Students have the opportunity to purchase discounted seasonal tickets from First for the use on their buses in West Yorkshire only. Costs are changing regularly so please check the First website. If you only travel within the "green zone" which covers the City Centre, Clarence Dock, Woodhouse, Headingley you are better off with a Green Zone ticket.

All tickets can be purchased from First Travel Centre in New Market Street or online.

Timetables for relevant buses and trains are available from train and bus stations, Leeds University Union or you can download a copy of the timetable from the Metro website.

The Dales Bus services provide a means to travel into the Yorkshire Dales without using your car. If you are a student there is also a discount which gives you an extra incentive to use the service. The latest Dales Bus Timetable can be downloaded from the Metro website.
