School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies

Fine Art at the University of Leeds

The School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies is unusual in siting undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in practice-based Fine Art alongside the academic disciplines of Art History and Cultural Studies, the whole embedded in a research-intense university setting.

The BA Fine Art, MFA and MA Fine Art programmes are led by practicing artists for whom teaching is very much an extension of their practice. As well as taking part in programmes of study within the structures of their courses, our students will have opportunities to work alongside their artist tutors on exhibitions, publications, films, live events and other projects. Leeds itself has a lively and radical arts scene, characterised by a number of artist-run initiatives, many of them set up by our graduates as a result of their off-campus projects undertaken during their studies.

Peter Morgan, screenwriter for such notable films as The Last King of Scotland, The Queen and The Damned United, said of his experience of Fine Art at Leeds in the 80s, "It was like going into a wall at about 100 miles an hour. I was thrown in with extremely radical, politicised people who tore me to pieces. It was a very good experience."

Our aim in Fine Art is to offer an equally disorienting, demanding, difficult but ultimately life-changing experience to students today.
