Following Patrick Keiller's acclaimed films, London (1994), Robinson
in Space (1997) and The Dilapidated Dwelling (2000), The
City of the Future explores contrasts between the familiarity of old city fabric, the strangeness
of the past and the newness of present-day experience. With archive film of
UK landscapes from the beginnings of cinema c1896-1903, the project develops
a critique of present-day and possible future spatial experience. Keiller will
talk about the project before screening the latest version of a work which
weaves a fictional narrative into the exhaustive collection of early footage
which he has meticulously catalogued.
