MICHAEL SANDLE
War or Peace?'
Michael Sandle is a controversial artist of international renown, known for critical works relating to war. This exhibition 'War or Peace?' will focus on a number of these, among them his colossal 'A 20th Century Memorial' (on loan from the Tate Gallery) which consists of a skeletal Mickey Mouse seated behind a Machine Gun.
Sandle has also prepared a series of drawings for a Monument to the Leeds Pals, which will be shown together for the first time - appropriately in Leeds. ( Wikipedia: Leeds Pals and existing Leeds Pals Memorial in Colsterdale.)
There will be maquettes for other sculptures, other drawings, paintings and graphics as well as Sandle items from the holdings of the Brotherton Library's Special Collections.
This will be a unique exhibition shown only in Leeds at the Centenary Gallery of the University. It will be a special opportunity for viewers to gain insight into the artist's work.
Curated by Benedict Read and Peter Morton of the University's School of Fine Art, it will be held from Monday July 9th to Friday August 31st 2007.
Centenary Gallery, July 9th to Friday August 31st, Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 5.00pm.
STOP PRESS!
Michael Sandle's 'Iraq Triptych' has just gone on show at this summer's Royal Academy exhibition to international acclaim. 4.5 x 1.5 metres in size, it shows Tony and Cherie Blair as if being expelled from Paradise with the human detritus of the Iraq War on either side, including 'Corporal Payne's Chorus'. The work has been awarded the Hugh Casson prize for drawing.
