Hiring a gown

You must first register your attendance for a degree ceremony. You will need the code you are given at the end of the registration process when you hire your gown.

Order your gown from Ede and Ravenscroft, either online or by phone. It is cheaper to order online – see Cost of gown hire.

There is a deadline for ordering your academic dress in advance. If you miss the deadline, you can hire a gown on the day. This costs more and there is no guarantee of availability, so we strongly advise you to order in advance.

Collecting your gown

Collect your gown from the Leeds University Union Building at least 90 minutes before the ceremony start time. Return your gown to the same place after the ceremony.

What to wear under your gown

Degree ceremonies are formal occasions, so you should dress smartly.

We recommend that men wear a dark suit or shirt and trousers, and women wear a smart dress, or skirt/trousers with a blouse.

The hood of your gown will need to be secured to your top: this will need to be done with pins if your top isn’t a button-down style.
