Academic dress

All students who participate in the degree ceremonies will be required to wear the academic dress of the University. Academic dress Ede and Ravenscroft is the official robe maker to the University of Leeds.

Before ordering academic dress you must register your attendance for a degree ceremony as you will require the code which is provided at the end of the graduation registration process. Registration opens on the 1st May 2013.  To order your gown, please go to gownhire.co.uk

What will my academic dress look like?
Academic dress for bachelors and masters degrees consists of a black gown with the appropriate hood for your degree. Higher degrees often wear coloured gowns and hoods and in some instances, a velvet hat. For a description of what your gown will look like click here

Why is the mortarboard not included with the gown?
Through long established University custom and practice, students do not wear the cap (mortarboard) prescribed as part of full academic dress. Caps are available for photographic purposes from the University robe maker, Ede and Ravenscroft, who are based in the Leeds University Union Building throughout the entire ceremony period.

What do I wear under my academic dress?
As the degree ceremonies are formal occasions it is advised that students wear smart dress. We recommend that men wear a dark suit or shirt and trousers, and women, a smart dress, or skirt or trousers with a blouse. As hoods need to be secured to tops, please bear in mind that if you are not wearing a buttoned blouse, your hood will need to be pinned to your clothing.

What is the deadline to pre-order academic dress?
We recommend that all students pre-order their academic dress. Pre-orders open in May 2013 and the deadline to order is the 21st June 2013. Students who pre-order online will receive an online discount of £5.

What if I have not pre-ordered my gown by the 21st June?
If you miss the deadline to pre-order a gown you will need to see Ede and Ravenscroft on the day of your ceremony to arrange gown hire.

Where do I collect my gown on the day?
Gown collections and returns are in the Leeds University Union Building (campus map).  Please ensure you arrive at the University at least 90 minutes before your ceremony to give yourself enough time to collect your tickets and gown. A map of the Leeds University Union Building and its facilities can be found here.
