Learning Outcomes

The aim of this tutorial, which is comprised of three stages, is to introduce you to how historians use images and illustrations to understand the past. In this first stage of the tutorial, you will focus on an important image from the history of electricity - the French artist Raoul Dufy's mural La Fée Electricité, which was painted in 1937 - and what it can tell us about the ways that people have depicted electricity and the people who might be seen as having contributed towards our understanding and use of it. When you get to the end of the tutorial you should be able to answer questions on the following subjects:

You should also develop the following skills:

These skills will help you with the more advanced stages of the tutorial. However, these skills will also help you in other ways. More specifically, by the end of this stage of the tutorial, you should have a better understanding of how to use images as historical evidence, which will broaden the range of materials that you can handle and, as a consequence, enable you to build stronger arguments in your essays.

As you work through the tutorial, you may want to keep a record of your answers with a notepad and paper.
