Leeds Institute of Health Sciences

The Academic Unit of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences

The Academic Unit of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences has been part of the School of Medicine since 1911. It was originally founded by one of the first British Chairs in Psychiatry, Professor Joseph Shaw Bolton, to prevent and treat mental disorders in humans. AUPBS now has a broader remit applying a bio-psychosocial model of mental disorder and wellbeing to teaching, research and clinical practice.

Psychiatry

AUPBS is one of the largest groupings in LIHS. The staff are mainly practitioners (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists) and applied behavioural scientists (research methodologists and psychologists) who work together to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate training for doctors, health services practitioners and researchers, and rigorous research that informs patient and professional experiences of health and illness.

The research focus is applied health research and, in particular, psychological aspects of healthcare. Our work ranges from developing understanding of health-related behaviour, the causes and impact of mental disorder, to enabling behaviour change. In disease terms, the main interests are in chronic or long-term illness, including mental health problems, disorders often associated with ageing such as stroke and cancer, and genetic disorders. Our research uses a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative, qualitative and health economic evaluations.
